Epistle to be Left in the Earth
I first came across Archibald MacLeish's poem Epistle to be Left in the Earth in the fall of my freshman year of high school and have loved it ever since. In the fall of 2009, while searching for ideas for a book, I thought of illustrating this poem.
It was difficult, especially initially, to avoid literally illustrating the text, but as I worked I allowed myself more freedom both in imagery and typography, playing with the poem itself as I typed and drew and painted. Finally, I Coptic-bound the pages together between simple black covers.
